Groundbreaking and Luncheon in The Woodlands

You read it right! The groundbreaking of Texas Children’s Hospital The Woodlands was celebrated during a two-part day that ended in a one-of-a-kind way. Get the rundown and see the ending that had everyone giddy.

On January 31, 2014, the eve of Texas Children’s 60th birthday, nearly 400 people attended the  groundbreaking ceremony for Texas Children’s Hospital The Woodlands. The ceremonial dig was followed by a group of patients singing “Happy Birthday” and blowing out the candles on a delicious cake designed as a replica of the new hospital.

Why all the fuss? Immediately after the ceremony, nearly 600 people attended a luncheon to learn exactly why the hospital is such a big deal. Mark A. Wallace, president and chief executive officer of Texas Children’s, along with Woodlands resident Carol Garner, shared details about this expansion project and emphasized just how important it will be in the life of area residents.

And as if the afternoon couldn’t get any more exciting, the crowd learned that Nordstrom has chosen Texas Children’s Hospital The Woodlands as the sole beneficiary of a September 3, 2014, gala to celebrate the opening of its new location in The Woodlands.

On the scene: Special guest Carol Ann Demaret, resident of The Woodlands and mother of David Vetter (known to the world as the “Bubble Boy”), was one of the hundreds of guests who celebrated that day, along with community leaders Shirley and Ralph Alexander, Rachel and Adam Dunn, Johnna and Ryan Edone, and Missy and Wayne Herndon.

Happy endings: The luncheon ended after the most delectable dessert arrived at the tables — double chocolate cupcakes with commemorative shovels plunged in the middle.
